“They looked at the stories,” Lucas told Rose, “and they said, ‘We want to make something for the fans.’” Lucas’s 2015 interview with Rose is thick with displeasure and insinuation, but it boils down to one clear point: Disney had not taken Star Wars in the direction that Lucas would have preferred. “Buying my stories is part of what the deal is,” Lucas later told Bloomberg.3 On reception of the goods, though, it seems that Disney was not impressed. Lucas was so sure that Disney would be keen to make more Star Wars in his mold that he didn’t even let Disney executives look at his treatments until the deal was done. To sweeten the Disney deal, he had written story treatments for three more Star Wars films-the very idea of which had been chimeric for so long. This hadn’t necessarily been Lucas’s original idea. Lucas would see The Force Awakens for the first time in a darkened theater just like the rest of us. After four decades, Lucas had in 2012 sold Lucasfilm and Star Wars to the Disney Corporation for $4 billion. “I don’t like that.” This was the other major point in time that The Force Awakens marked: it wasn’t just the first new Star Wars film in a decade it was the first one made with no input from the creator himself. “They wanted to do a retro movie,” Lucas told Charlie Rose on his talk show.

“J J did it,” was all he tweeted.2 The film was a creative and financial success, the second Star Wars film, Rogue One, was on its way and looking good, and the animated series Star Wars: Rebels was steadily puttering along on Disney’s cable channels. “It’s a return to greatness.”1 Patton Oswalt, the actor and comedian, was even more succinct in his praise. “What a beautiful, thrilling, joyous, surprising and heart-thumping 1Īdventure this is,” wrote Richard Roeper for the Chicago Sun-Times. There were breathless reviews, teary YouTube reaction videos, and screaming fans at red carpet events. Despite the lingering ire over the three prequel films, despite the general skepticism surrounding the idea of new Star Wars movies, people weren’t just happy to see Star Wars return they were overwhelmed. Abrams, introducing us to Rey, Finn, and Poe, and reintroducing us to Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Luke Skywalker-aged, but still familiar. And so here was The Force Awakens in December 2015, with a new director, J. No more Jedi Knights, no more Wookiees, no more Darth Vader. Following the bitter taste of the prequel trilogy, the last of which was released in 2005, there was to be no more Star Wars stories on the big screen. It had been unthinkable: George Lucas, the creator and overseer general of all things Star Wars and Lucasfilm, had promised us, repeatedly and over several years, that this would never happen.
